Bali Electrical Company (PLN) was forced to delay the maintenance of the gas powered electric generator in Gilimanuk because the Lebaran holiday. Agung Mastika, the spokesman of Bali’s PLN, said “originally, the maintenance was scheduled on September 23rd through November 23th 2009. However, the program rescheduled into October 10th through December 6th 2009.”
The maintenance of the generator is needed because it already operated in long period of time. During the maintenance, Bali will suffer from electricity shortage. In order to anticipate the problem, the PLN must turn off the power in certain area for several hours.
Mastika explained that currently, the capacity of electricity power available for Bali is 562 megawatts with the total power needed is 493 megawatts. However, if the Gilimanuk generator can not be used, the power vailable was only 432 megawatts. There is no other option besides turn off the power in certain area.
The electricity will be turned off on the peak burden which happens on 6 through 11 pm local time. The PLN also urged the people in Bali to save the electricity at least 50 through 100 watts.
If the people could save the electricity, the black out can be avoided. Mastika said that the area that will be turn off will be in turn and had been arrange so the customers will not feel the disadvantage.
In one village, there will be four times of black out for two months. The PLN will give the schedule so the people can prepare everything before the power cut.
