The annual kite festival which was held in Padanggalak beach was very crowded started in the morning through the afternoon. Hundreds of giant traditional kites filled the sky of the beach.
Since early in the morning, hundreds of truck and cars was coming to the beach bringing the kite. The giant size of the kites made it difficult for the contestant to enter the festival place. The committee must arrange the entry order to avoid long traffic jam.
I Putu Aria, a youngster from Banjar Tunjungtiti, Kesiamn, Denpasar, said “we made the kite two months ago and it is a ‘bebean’ kite. We tested the kites many times in order to find the perfect spot to place the rope.” He came with tenth of his colleagues and accompanied by a set of traditional Balinese music.
Aria said that the kite needed 30 through 50 meters of fabric to cover the wooden frame of the kites. To fly the kites, rope with 1 centimeter diameter is needed. However in the middle of the day, the wind was not very strong. The condition made few kites could not fly.
The audiences cheered when there was kites fly gracefully into the sky. The music also became louder when the kites started to airbone. The opposite things happened when the kite could not fly. “As young generation, we considered that the festival is very important and we must preserve it together,” said Aria.
The criteria of judgment in the festival are the color which must contains the traditional Balinese color, black, yellow, white, red and purple. The movement of the kites in the sky is also being the point of judgment.
According to several contestants, the kites must be able to move to the right and left in the air. It will give extra points. The esthetic point is the kite must be able to produce sound in the air. Most of the participant added rope from rattan in the body of the kites. The rope will made special sound if it being hit by strong wind.
