Denpasar – Bali is to host the 9th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) on August 9-13 this year.
“The congress which will be held in August will be attended by AIDS experts, observers, and victims from various countries,” ICAAP organizing committee chaiman, Prof Dewa Nyoman Wirawan, said here on Wednesday.
He said the congress, scheduled to be opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, will be held for the participants to exchange views on matters related to HIV/AIDS epidemic which is spreading throughout the Asia-Pacific countries.
At least 5,000 participants from at least ten countries in the congress will also exchange views on ways to cure such a disease.
Nyoman Wirawan said the committee has appointed two locations, namely the area around Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue at Jimbaran hill, and Bali International Convention Center (BICC) in Nusa Dua, Bdung district, as the venues for the congress.
On the separate occation, Badung district head A A Gde Agung said he would positively welcome and support the process of the congress on HIV/AIDS management efforts.
To ensure security during the congress, the Badung district head said coordination and communication will be made between the organizing committee and the security personnel from Bali Police and Udayana Militery Command.
Gde Agung has asked that before the congress is conducted, local people should be familiarized with the topic.
“The familiarization should be made carefully and accurately in order to avoid misunderstandings, which are feared to influence the image of tourism in Bali,” Gde Agung said.
Meanwhile, Badung deputy district head, I Ketut Sudikerta, who is also the chairman of Badung regional AIDS Management Commision (KPAD), said he would support the congress.
Through the congress, he said, the participants will exchange views on HIV/AIDS management in addition to supporting tourism in Bali.
