Denpasar – Bali’s ornamental aquarium fish exports in 2008 fell 9.93 percent to US$5.12 million from US$5.69 million a year earlier.
“In terms of volume, the aquarium fish exports in 2008 increased 7.25 percent from the year before,” Head of the Fish Capture and Farming Sction at the Bali Provincial Fisheries and Marine Affairs Office Anak Agung Gede Mahendra said on Sunday.
Bali’s aquarium fish exports in 2008 increased to 5.12 million head from 13.6 million head in 2007, he said.
The export of aquarium fish caught in Bali and other waters in Indonesia went to Japan, the United States and Australia, he said. Aquarium fish is one of the province’s 27 fishery product exports.
The fish from Indonesia, especially Bali, are highly demanded abroad because they are varied and very beautiful. According to several researchers, the colorful fish in aquariums are capable of decreasing peoples’ stress levels and it is very easy to plece them in home aquariums.
