Denpasar – The southern Bali area such as Denpasar, Kuta, Badung, and Ubud will be dark because the Indonesian Electricity Company (PLN) must cut the power in those areas for a week starting on April 21st through April 28th 2009.
I Wayan Redika, the public relations of PLN for southern Bali network area, said that the power cut is needed because Gilimanuk Power Plant needs some maintenance and repairs. The power plant which can produce 130 Megawatts of power is entering the A2 maintenance period which will take approximately one week.
With the absence of Gilimanuk Power Plant in Bali’s electrical system, there will be a deficit of power in Bali, around 70 megawatts. In the peak burden, Bali needs approximately 460 megawatts of electricity power in order to fulfill the demand of electricity.
Redika said that the electricity will be turned off from 6 pm through 10 pm, but for vital customers such as the hospital and Ngurah Rai Airport, they will continue to receive electricity as usual.
“If most of the customers could decrease the use of electricity, then we wouldn’t have to turn off the power for long period of time,” added Redika. Hotels and restaurants have been informed of the power cut, so they could have adequate time to prepare their generators in order to anticipate the black out.
